Beloved Fire Captain Dies in July 4th Boating Accident

CITRUS COUNTY – Sad news to report out of Citrus County today, after a 4th of July boating accident claimed the life of a beloved Citrus County Fire Captain.

Citrus County Fire Rescue released the following statement: It is with profound sadness that Citrus County Fire Rescue announces the passing of one of our esteemed training captains, Michael Fletcher, due to an off-duty boating incident that occurred in Crystal River on the night of Thursday, July 4, 2024.

42-year-old Michael Fletcher dedicated six years of service to Citrus County Fire Rescue and approximately 20 years to Marion County Fire Rescue, demonstrating exceptional leadership and expertise in training our firefighters to uphold the highest standards of safety and service.

Fire Chief Craig Stevens expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, "Captain Michael Fletcher was a pillar of our department, known for his dedication and compassion. His loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside him."

"I am deeply saddened by the death of one of Citrus County's own, Captain Michael Fletcher", expressed County Administrator Steve Howard. "I extend my deepest and utmost condolences, to Captain Fletcher's family, and to each member of Citrus County Fire Rescue on the loss of a brother."

The department respectfully requests privacy for Captain Fletcher's family during this difficult time. Details regarding funeral arrangements and memorial services will be communicated once finalized.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Fletcher's family, friends, and colleagues as we mourn the untimely passing of a dedicated member of our firefighting community.
