SPRING HILL – A 20-month-old boy was just two months from his 2nd birthday when tragedy struck in the form of an unintentional drug overdose.
Officials have not released a full report, but according to jail records, 38-year-old Nickolas Joseph Lombardi Jr. was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with his son's death.
The details on how the child died have not been made available but sources say the toddler ingested narcotics that belonged to his father. The child died on March 8, 2022.
Lombardi has been in and out of prison since 2010 on several drug-related charges, including possession and trafficking.
During a first appearance hearing this morning, Lombardi asked the judge, "What probable cause do you have?" Judge Barbara-Jo Bell responded, "Because there is a warrant for your arrest."
State Attorney Pete Magrino, who handles the majority of capital crime prosecutions, advised the court that Lombardi was just released from prison on October 1, 2019, which makes him eligible for the re-offender mandatory life sentence guideline. As a result, Judge Bell withdrew his $50,000 bond and held him without bond.
We reached out to the child's mother, but she declined to comment on the incident.
The Sheriff's Office declined to comment on the investigation.
R News is not releasing the identity of the child out of respect for the family.
