PORT RICHEY – The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is reporting a deputy involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop early this morning.
According to officials, a deputy was conducting a traffic stop after a suspicious vehicle was reported at the Rodeway Inn on US 19, just south of SR 52. As the deputy approached the car, a man ran away and the deputy followed for a few feet. The man then circled back to the car, got in and tried to drive away. The deputy was actively attempting to get the man to stop the car, but was ultimately dragged approximately 150 feet in the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn. At the same time, the man was reaching for something under the driver's seat. The deputy then fired approximately three shots at the man. The man then fell out of the car with the deputy. The deputy then began life-saving measures, but the man ultimately died. The suspect's identity will not be released at this time.
The deputy did not suffer significant injuries, according to reports.
Officials say, the suspect has a long violent criminal history in Pasco County, which includes 43 arrests for various crimes, including robbery, burglary, and narcotics. The suspect was also a documented gang member. He was just released from prison In December of 2021, according to officials
The FDLE will investigate the deputy-involved shooting, per a standing agreement.
Official say the deputy's body worn camera came dislodged during the confrontation and will not be available for release.
The investigation continues.
